Below is the assigned reading for all students for summer 2025. Reading should be completed by the first day of school.

Book No. 1: The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis. An unusual title, given that the book is not about divorce, but has been affectionately named "The Bus Ride to Heaven." We follow the soul of our protagonist as he takes a bus ride from Purgatory to Heaven, where souls are met by beloved persons from their lifetimes who try to convince them to come with them to Heaven. This story is a fascinating and masterful character study, a seamless blend of fantasy, psychology, and theology. What is Heaven, and who goes there? What keeps people from welcoming joy into their lives? This work and its many colorful characters explore questions of the afterlife in the way only C.S. Lewis can do. You may obtain this book anywhere you wish, and read at your leisure; it is rather short, approximately 120 pages. This will be our all-school reading assignment. Read over the summer and come prepared to discuss during the first week of school.

Book No. 2: Our new Literature teacher would like each of you to read any other book of your choosing this summer. It can be fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, at whatever reading level is comfortable for you - and write at least one handwritten paragraph explaining what your choice of this book reveals about you. Please bring your written assignment to the first day of Literature class.
